Lothlórien

Lady Galadriel

Daughter of Finarfin and Eärwen, and sister to Finrod Felagund. Because of her involvement in the rebellion of the Noldor against the Valar, she was exiled to remain in Middle-earth until such time that she was allowed to return to Valinor.

During the First Age she met and wedded Celeborn of Doriath and remained with him in Middle-earth when most of her people were allowed to return to Valinor. She herself was allowed to return but proudly refused and thus was not allowed to return to Valinor until much later.

During the Second Age, Galadriel and Celeborn traveled to Lothlórien and there created a beautiful realm with the Wood-elves of that region. The Golden Wood, as Lothlórien became known, became a mighty, secret realm. So secret was this realm that elves from outside Lothlórien's borders could not find it unless guided by one of Lothlórien's own.

Galadriel bears Nenya, the Ring of Adamant, one of the elven rings of power. It is also known as the Ring of Water.

During the Third Age, Galadriel allowed passage through Lothlórien to the Fellowship of Nine. It is here that Frodo gazes into the mirror of Galadriel and also offers freely to her the One Ring. Although deep inside she has always dreamed of possessing it, she refuses and thus is allowed once again to return to Valinor. When the Fellowship leaves Lothlórien, she presents each with a gift. The greatest of these gifts is that of a phial containing the light of Eärendil, the beloved star of the Elves, which she presented to Frodo to "light the darkest places when all other lights go out."

At the end of the Third Age, after the War of the Ring, Galadriel returns to Valinor with Elrond, Gandalf, Bilbo, and Frodo.

Galadriel’s Lament

Ah! like gold fall the leaves in the wind,
long years numberless as the wings of trees!

The long years have passed like swift draughts

of the sweet mead in lofty halls

beyond the West, beneath the blue vaults of Varda

wherein the stars tremble

in the song of her voice, holy and queenly.

Who now shall refill the cup for me?

For now the Kindler, Varda, the Queen of the stars,

from Mount Everwhite has uplifted her hands like clouds
and all paths are drowned deep in shadow;

and out of a grey country darkness lies
on the foaming waves between us,

and mist covers the jewels of Calacirya for ever.

Now lost, lost to those of the East is Valimar!

Farewell! Maybe thou shalt find Valimar!

Maybe even thou shalt find it! Farewell!

Lord Celeborn

Grey-elven Lord from Doriath, kinsman of King Thingol Greycloak.

He wedded Galadriel sometime during the First Age and during the Second Age traveled with her to Lothlórien where he became the Lord of that mighty realm.

During the Third Age at the time of the War of the Ring, Celeborn led the armies of Lothlórien against the forces of Sauron along the eastern edges of the woods of Lothlórien and Mirkwood. Both Celeborn's and King Thranduil of Mirkwood's forces were successful and later they both renamed Mirkwood to Eryn
Lasgalen.

At the end of the Third Age, after Galadriel sailed West over the sea to Valinor, Celeborn left Lothlórien to dwell for some time with the sons of Elrond in Rivendell. Eventually, he too sailed West to Valinor and was reunited with Galadriel.
