Notable Elf of the Month – Thranduil

Thranduil sits on his throne.Thranduil: King of the Woodland Realm, also known as Mirkwood.

While his birth is unknown, it is assumed he was alive sometime during the First Age, and most likely was kin to Celeborn who lived in Doriath, Beleriand with King Elu Thingol.

After the sinking of Beleriand he lived for a short time with his father, Oropher, and Celeborn in Harlindon, but then sometime prior to SA 1000 journeyed east to help found a kingdom in Eryn Galen – Greenwood the Great.

The dwarves of Erebor helped to build the underground Halls that Thranduil and his father Oropher ruled from. It is said that they were reminiscent of Menegroth, the Halls of Elu Thingol and Melian in Doriath, Beleriand.

Thranduil most likely marched with his father Oropher and the Silvan elves’ forces during the War of the Last Alliance. Oropher was too proud to march under High-king Gil-Galad‘s command and the Silvan elves received heavy losses during the Battle of Dagorlad, most notably Oropher himself. After the loss of his father, Thranduil returned to Eryn Galen with the remainder of the Silvan elves.

In the TA 2941, Thranduil briefly imprisoned Thorin Oakenshield and his band of dwarves and Bilbo Baggins as they travelled through Mirkwood on their way to Erebor. He sent aid to the peoples of Laketown after the dragon Smaug rose from his slumber in the mountain of Erebor and attacked them, and marched with them to Erebor when they demanded recompense from Thorin’s band for the attack. It was while they were camped outside of Erebor that they would be attacked by Orcs and wolves and would join together to fight what became known as the Battle of Five Armies. After the battle, the dwarves richly rewarded Thranduil and his people (Thranduil, it is said, had a great love of jewels and riches).

During the year 3018, Aragorn brought Gollum to Thranduil where Thranduil agreed to keep him prisoner until it could be decided what was to be done with him. Gollum escaped the Silvan elves and Thranduil sent his son Legolas to Rivendell to inform Aragorn and Elrond of the creature’s escape. Legolas then became a companion on the quest to destroy the One Ring.

During the War of the Ring, Thranduil’s realm was attacked from Dol Guldur in the south. His forces and those of Celeborn’s from Lothlórien joined and defeated the enemy, and destroyed Dol Guldur. New boundaries for both Thranduil’s and Celeborn’s realms were established and Mirkwood was renamed Eryn Lasgalen.

Thranduil remained in Middle-earth into the Fourth Age, but it is not known if he eventually took a ship into the West.
