USA Today reveals exclusive new image of Radagast in The Hobbit

USA Today has some exclusive new photos from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. One image in particular is extremely interesting; none other than that of Radagast the Brown played by Sylvester McCoy!

From USA Today:  The wizard Radagast the Brown (Sylvester McCoy) is only mentioned in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Hobbit book once, but Boyens had enough to go on to boost his role in the new movie series, and she feels he’s going to become a well-loved character. “He’s not at all like Gandalf,” Boyens says. “There’s a power and danger and sharpness and wits and cunning even about Gandalf that you sense immediately, whereas Radagast is much quieter and gentler. You could mistakenly think he’s not even a wizard or that he might not have any powers of his own, and then you discover that he does.”

Official 2013 Hobbit calendar reveals interesting images

**NOTE: This post has been updated 23 Aug, 2012. See the end of this post for the update.

The Heirs of Durin have posted images from the official The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 2013 calendar being produced by Mead.

The 16-month calendar features the hobbit Bilbo and his Dwarf companions along with the wizard Gandalf. Other characters featured from the upcoming film include elves Galadriel, Elrond, and Legolas, as well as our first look at the wizard Radagast the Brown!

Radagast from the official 2013 Hobbit calendarRadagast the Brown is being played by former Doctor Who actor Sylvester McCoy. In the last video production diary uploaded by director Peter Jackson we got to see and hear from McCoy but were not given a glimpse as to what his character Radagast would look like. In this calendar we finally get to see an image of the wizard, though it is still not the best. Radagast is one of the five wizards to be sent to Middle-earth by the Valar and he is the friend of beasts, birds, and living things. He has great knowledge of plants and herbs and it is said that he can create illusions.

Elrond from the official 2013 Hobbit calendarAnother interesting image in the calendar is that of Elrond. The calendar features the wise elf lord in his armor that he wore during the Battle of the Last Alliance briefly shown in The Lord of the Rings films. Does this mean that there is a possibility that Peter Jackson will be using creative license to have Elrond fighting alongside King Thranduil and his Mirkwood elves during the Battle of the Five Armies in The Hobbit? Or is the image just a filler for the calendar? The image used for Legolas in the calendar is one that was used during promotion of The Lord of the Rings, so it’s quite possible that the one used for Elrond is also one from the LOTR trilogy. Sadly, neither King Thranduil nor Tauriel, two Mirkwood elves we’ve yet to see official photos for, are featured in this calendar.

*UPDATE: See the post ‘Elrond at the Battle of the Five Armies?‘ for more analysis on the image of Elrond included in the calendar and what this might mean in The Hobbit.

The calendar also comes with free electronic content that you can install on your computer. An event widget will allow you to set appointments and birthday reminders.  There is also a bonus downloadable wallpaper for your computer featuring the characters from The Hobbit.

You can order your copy of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey calendar directly from Mead at The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Wall Calendar (DDD891) | MEAD

**UPDATE – 23 Aug, 2012: It appears Mead may have made a mistake with having the calendar available so soon. I received an email from them this morning informing me that my order has been canceled. A look at their website shows that the calendar is currently not available for purchase, but can be added to a Wish List. Likewise, Amazon has the calendar available for a pre-order, with a release date of October 3.

Peter Jackson brings Comic-Con to fans in latest Hobbit production video No.8

Monday, July 23, director Peter Jackson uploaded The Hobbit production video #8 to his Facebook page.

This latest video shows fans a bit of what went on behind the scenes at Comic-Con in San Diego and also shows a look at what fans in Hall H at Comic-Con got to see.

We are taken back to the final days of filming principal photography for The Hobbit. Jackson gives us glimpses of different sets that we’ll see in the upcoming films, as well as more cast interviews and behind the scene shenanigans with Martin Freeman as the hobbit Bilbo and his dwarf companions.

For the first time we get to hear from actor Lee Pace who will be playing elven King Thranduil. He tells a little about what it was like to play an elf. During his interview, we also briefly get to see some Mirkwood elves in action during a fight scene.

Another first is seeing actor Sylvester McCoy as wizard Radagast the Brown. We get to see his abode of Rhosgobel (meaning “Brown Fenced Homestead”), and hear McCoy practicing some bird calls.

Rhosgobel, the wizard Radagast the Brown’s house.

Other places we get to see for the first time are the town Dale, which has a Mediterranean style to it, Goblintown, Beorn’s House, and possibly a shot of parts of Thranduil’s Halls.

Possibly the wine cellar in King Thranduil’s Halls?

Actors Sir Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom, and Cate Blanchett, first seen in The Lord of the Rings trilogy films can be seen once again filming some of their last scenes as Gandalf, Legolas and Galadriel. Still no glimpses of Benedict Cumberbatch as the dragon Smaug, nor Evangeline Lily as elf Tauriel (though she may be the auburn haired elf in the fight scene shown during Lee Pace’s interview).

This is the last video following the principal photography for The Hobbit, but Jackson promises more entries that will give fans a behind the scenes look at Post Production on the films.
