Lindon

Map of Lindon

During the First Age, Lindon was the land of Ossiriand in Beleriand that was inhabited by the Laiquendi (Green-elves). The Noldor named the region Lindon, meaning Land of Song, because the Laiquendi were fond of singing and the woods of that area would often be filled with their songs.

After the War of Wrath, also known as The Great Battle, which consisted of the combined forces of Elves, Men, and the Valar against the dark lord Melkor and his forces, most of Beleriand was sunk beneath the waves of the ocean, Belegaer. This brought to a close the First Age and started the Second Age. Some of the lands of Ossiriand were all that remained of Beleriand west of the Ered Luin (Blue Mountains). These remaining lands became known as Lindon.

Lindon became the realm of Gil-Galad, the sixth and last High-elven King of the Noldor. It was divided into two halves by the Gulf of Lhûn which ran from east to west through the region. The northern half was called Forlindon (North Lindon) with the sounthern half called Harlindon (South Lindon). In Forlindon stood the elvish city of Forlond which was the seat of Gil-Galad, in the south stood the elvish city of Harlond where Celeborn and Galadriel resided. At the east end of the Gulf rested the the main elvish harbor of Mithlond (Grey Havens) which was maintained by Círdan.
