Nestled between two branches of the river Bruinen (Loudwater) at the foot of the Hithaeglir (Misty Mountains), is the elvish dwelling Rivendell, also known as Imladris in the elvish language of Sindarin, and as The Last Homely House.
Rivendell was founded by Elrond in SA 1697 with the remaining Noldorin elves from the Eregion region of Middle-earth after their leader, Celebrimbor, was slain by the dark lord, Sauron. Other notable elves that resided there are Gildor Inglorion and Glorfindel. The Dúnedain, those remnants of the men from Númenor, also sought refuge within Rivendell's walls.
At the end of the Second Age, High-elven King Gil-Galad and the King of Men, Elendil, used Rivendell as a launch point for their campaign against Sauron. During the Third Age, Bilbo and the Dwarves in The Hobbit sought Elrond's council here, and many years later, a great council would be held here to determine the fate of the One Ring in which Frodo, Bilbo's nephew, offers to take the ring to Mordor.
